The Abolition of Man: C.S. Lewis on Losing—and Recovering—Order (Dr. Bryan Hollon)

Special Saturday Seminar Sept 26

What happens when a culture abandons objective truth and moral order?

In 1943, C.S. Lewis delivered three lectures that would become The Abolition of Man, warning that a civilization severed from objective truth and moral standards does not liberate humanity—it diminishes it. More than 80 years later, Lewis’s insights remain remarkably relevant, offering a clear diagnosis of our cultural moment and a compelling vision for recovering the moral order that leads to true human flourishing.

The Very Rev. Dr. Bryan C. Hollon, Ph.D., Dean and President of Trinity Anglican Seminary and former Director of the C.S. Lewis Institute of Northeast Ohio, taught a one-day seminar exploring one of Lewis’s most significant and timely works.

Across three engaging sessions, Dr. Hollon traced Lewis’s argument from the loss of objective moral truth, to the rise of moral subjectivism, and finally to his sobering warning that humanity’s conquest of nature ultimately becomes nature’s conquest of humanity.

Participants were encouraged to read The Abolition of Man in advance of the seminar, and they left with a deeper understanding of Lewis’s thought and why it continues to speak so powerfully today.
